Summer
2010 BaD League
The Club
enters 7 Mixed and 1 Womens teams into the Bad (Bristol and
District) Winter League (www.badsquash.co.uk).
The final
positions at end of the Summer 2010 season are:
Mixed
A 1st in Premier
Mixed B 1st in Division 2A - Promoted
Mixed C 1st in Division 2B - Promoted
Mixed D 2nd in Division 2B - Promoted
Mixed E 3rd in Division 2A
Mixed F 2nd in Division 3B - Promoted
Mixed G 1st in Division 3B - Promoted
Womens 6th in Division 1
Well-done
to the Mixed A, B, C, D, F and G teams who all won promotion.
The Mixed E and Womens teams also played well in their respective
divisions. The summer leagues has been unusual in that most
teams were placed in lower divisions than expected, probably
as a result of relegations at the end of last summer. This
has led to significant success due a combination of more players
continuing to play on during the summer, the introduction
of new players, and the on-going development of junior players.
The Club
has entered 2 Mixed teams into the Bad (Bristol and District)

Champions

Mike Martin
and Susannah Reynolds

Matt Clarke
and Erica Howcroft

Matt Clarke
and Adrian Barnes
The final
day started with the ladies main event final between Susannah
Reynolds and Rachel Brindley. The first game was close, with
Susannah
winning it. In the 2nd game Susannah changed style, and surged
forward
after a very hard hit serve, to go 7 points to nil clear.
That game was
closed out, and the same tactics proved themselves in the
3rd, with Susannah winning the match 3-0. Rachel had a good
tournament, with a notable win against Harriet Minchin in
the early rounds.
The men's
final was between Will Rogers-Tizzard and Mike Martin. A battle
between youth and "considerable experience" was
won by Mike Martin, a
previous winner of the event some 10 years ago. Mike played
a controlled
game and did not allow Will many opportunities to use his
short game to any great effect. Will still wowed the crowd
with some excellent winners, and was pushing in the 3rd game,
until some forced errors following accurate shots
allowed Mike Martin to win the match 3-0.
The plate
finals were much closer. Adrian Barnes, playing in a another
tournament in Exeter on the Saturday, arranged his final on
Friday against
Peter Smith. Adrian, playing in his first Redland Squash Closed,
was
matched by Peter Smith, with Peter drawing evens at two games
all. Adrian forged a big lead in the 5th game, to the relief
of his father watching
upstairs, a lead too hard for Peter to chase down.
The ladies
plate final was between Erica Howcroft and Sarah Pritchard,
an
all Welsh affair. Having gone 2 nil down, Erica staged a huge
come back,
clinching the match 3-2. The game was the longest lasting
of the finals.
Thankyou
to everyone entered. I would also like to thank Richard Tookey
and Alice Clark in help marking some of the finals. We hope
to look at next
year arrangements asap and come back to you with a date for
your calendars.
Matt Clark,
BLTSC Squash Tournament Organiser.

Avon
County Junior Championships Redwood Lodge
Avon junior
squash players competed in the county Junior Squash Championships
at Redwood Lodge Country Club despite this Winters' freeze!
Juniors
from 7 to 17yrs old competed for championship age group titles
with some hard fought matches to become county champion. The
large entries represented the recent upsurge of local participants
of all abilities from novices to some elite performers who
have National and European rankings. Junior squash is expanding
in the area with a good selection of junior clubs and the
elite players are reaping the benefits of local Elite Squash
coach Hadrian Stiff who has competed at top world class level
over the years. Contact Jan Ellis on 07789796282 for details.
Well done
to the BLTSC stars who achieved some excellent results with
Sam Ellis, Peter Joyce, Roushan, Ewan and Karima all winning
their events. Congratulations also go out to Devin Welsh and
Adrian Barnes for reaching the finals as well as the others
who competed.
Results:
Boys Under 17 Sam Ellis; under 15 Peter Joyce; under 13 Roushan
Yau; under 11 Ewan Joyce. Girls under 15 Natasha Burrett;
under 13 Molly Kendall; under 1 Karima Tyma.

BAD
Squash Doubles tournament
The weekend
9th-11th October saw the BAD Squash Doubles tournament held
at BLTSC.
The format
was best of 5, American scoring, with no strokes being given!
There were 3 formats, Ladies, Men's and Mixed.
BLTSC
Results:
Alice
Bishop and Jan Ellis played in a left handed/right handed
partnership.
The ladies played a league system, with every team playing
everyone else.
Jan and Alice played very well, winning half of their matches.
Matthew
Clark and Alice Clark played in the mixed tournament, eventually
winning the Mixed Plate tournament against Nigel Tovey and
Caroline Moore.
Matthew
Clark and Gary Loughran played in the men's plate final, going
two
nil down. A quick change of position, with Gary playing against
the hard
hitting left handed opponent proved very useful, allowed the
BLTSC guys to
draw level at 2 games each. Matt and Gary eventually lost
out, losing the
match 2-3.

Annual
Club Closed Tournament 2009

Alice Bishop and Barney Elworthy
The annual
BLTSC club closed tournament was played over a period of 6
weeks with all Bad League and internal box players being automatically
entered and then given the opportunity to opt out. The Men's
tournament was broken into A, B and C grades based on league
and box positions.
The Ladies
final was played on Saturday 25th April between Alice Bishop
and Ann Manley. This was a repeat of the 2008 final and resulted
in the same victor by an identical score, i.e. Alice beat
Ann 3/1. The Mens A was won by Barney Elworthy who repeated
his 2007 and 2008 victory by defeating Frank Ellis 3/0. The
matches were running late which meant those turning up early
for the annual end-of-season dinner and dance were able to
watch and support their favourites.
After
the prize presentation, 60 members and partners attende the
dinner, which this year was a hot buffet. This was followed
by the captain's speeches. An excellent local Bristol band,
Wired 4 Sound, provided live music late into the night (www.wired4sound.org).

Ladies
Squash Success
Ann Manley, played in the Avon
over 50's team that has won the county national over 50's
championship for the 3rd year in a row!
Alice Bishop and Claire Kedward played in
the Avon County first team in March in Thame, Oxfordshire.
Although they did not win their matches overall, they were
in the potential promotion spot so stay in the same league
for next season.
Alice Bishop and Karen de Klerk were chosen
to play for the Avon county 2nd team in January in Leeds.
We came 2nd out of the 3 teams at the weekend event after
winning one match, and losing the other.
BLTSC
Ladies A team beat Redwood A in the Prem B play off by 4 matches
to 1.

BLTSC
Squash Handicap Tournament Final 2009

The 2009
final was contested by Julian Tizianel (-23) and Tim O'Leary
(-8). The final was a very close contest with Julian eventually
emerging the 2-0 winner, in a match that could easily have
gone either way.
The first
game saw Julian steadily chip away at his starting deficit
to catch Tim just in time to overhaul him 17-15. The second
game seemed to be going Tim's way until Julian put together
a run of 12 consecutive points to take the lead. Tim fought
back valiantly to get himself back in front, only to falter
at the final hurdle with Julian putting together another run
of points to close the game out 15-13 and take the trophy.

England
Squash Inter-County Championships 2007/08
BLTSC are justly proud of being the home of
five of the six players successful Avon men's over 45 team.
The team came away from Winchester Squash and Tennis club
with a resounding success in the England Inter-County Championships
scoring an almost perfect 59 out of 60 points. Devon coming
second with 31 points shows how strong the Avon performance
was which sends them into the premier inter-county division
next year to face the squash elites which include teams from
Lancashire and Yorkshire.
Thanks must go to Winchester for being such
welcoming and perfect hosts. And also to the Devon, Sussex
and Hants teams who all took part in the competitive, good
spirited and fun weekend (both on court and in the bar) -
this all being what makes squash so special.
Well done also Mike Martin, Mark Taylor, Nick
Drysdale, Ben Dillistone and Mark Regan for representing Redland
and not least to Captain Jeremy Goulding from Lansdown Bath.
