Annual Club Closed Tournament Alice
Bishop and Barney Elworthy
The
annual BLTSC club closed tournament was played over a period of 6 weeks with all
BaD League and internal box players being automatically entered and then given
the opportunity to opt out. Although this resulted in some byes in the early rounds,
most matches were played by the 98 male and 23 female entrants. The Men's tournament
was broken into A, B and C grades based on league and box positions. The
Ladies final was played on Saturday 26th April between Alice Bishop and Ann Manley.
Alice returned Ann's serve very well and dominated most rallies to win 9/2 9/6
8/10 9/5. The Mens A was won by Barney Elworthy who repeated his 2007 victory
by defeating Frank Ellis 3/2. The 1st game was won by Frank 9/3 after some tight
squash and many long rallies exceeding 50 shots. Barney then comfortably won the
2nd and 3rd games 9/0 and 9/1 by again extending the rallies before dropping the
ball short. Frank rallied in the 4th with some excellent power squash to win 6/9,
however Barney easily won the 5th 9/0. The Mens B finalwill be played between
the winner of Phil Riley & Peter Joyce and the winner of Alex Winser &
Sam Barham. The Mens C final was played between Hugo Wellesley and Nick Hawkesby.
Hugo ran out an easy winner 3/0. Nick probably regretted the lunchtime beers and
half-time pastie at the Rovers Ground ... not that it would have made any difference,
Rovers still lost! The annual end-of-season dinner was attended by 61
members and partners. A karaoke and disco followed the prize presentations and
captain's speeches.

Squash Inter-County Championships 2007/08 BLTSC
are justly proud of being the home of five of the six players successful Avon
men's over 45 team. The team came away from Winchester Squash and Tennis club
with a resounding success in the England Inter-County Championships scoring an
almost perfect 59 out of 60 points. Devon coming second with 31 points shows how
strong the Avon performance was which sends them into the premier inter-county
division next year to face the squash elites which include teams from Lancashire
and Yorkshire. Thanks must go to Winchester for being
such welcoming and perfect hosts. And also to the Devon, Sussex and Hants teams
who all took part in the competitive, good spirited and fun weekend (both on court
and in the bar) - this all being what makes squash so special. Well
done also Mike Martin, Mark Taylor, Nick Drysdale, Ben Dillistone and Mark Regan
for representing Redland and not least to Captain Jeremy Goulding from Lansdown
Bath.

Australia & Hosts South Africa Share World Masters Honours The 8th
World Masters Squash Championships, the biggest ever international event in the
sport, which was staged across five different venues, drew to a mighty climax
in Cape Town with honours evenly shared between England, Australia and hosts South
Africa. A record entry of 672 players, representing 33 countries, competed
in a total of 16 age-group events - from Over 35 for men and women to Over 65
for women and, for the first time, Over 75 for men! England, Australia and South
Africa each won five gold medals, with Ireland claiming a sole gold medal.

the 2006 title with a 9-7, 5-9, 9-4, 9-4 victory in the final over No4 seed Neil

England's top seed Mark Allen in straight games, while third seed Tootill crushed
surprise German opponent Matthias Scholl, a 9/16 seed, for the loss of just two
points. There
was an upset in the Over 60 event final when England's No2 seed Ann Manley
beat her top-seeded compatriot Bett Dryhurst 10-8, 9-4, 9-6. Earlier,

Annual Club Closed Tournament
Barney Elworthy
and
Claire Kedward
The
finals of the annual BLTSC club closed tournaments were played on Saturday 28th
April. The male event contained 26 entries and resulted in an exciting final between
the top 2 seeds, Barney Elworthy and Mike Martin. The match lasted 80 minutes
and Barney ran out a comfortable 3-0 winner once his running game and superior
fitness wore down his elder opponent. The
ladies final was contested between Ann Manley (World Over 60 Champion) and Claire
Kedward (reigning ladies club champion). Ann started by playing her usual slow
and controlling game and took a 2-0 lead, before Claire raised the pace and eventually
won 3-2. After
the prize presentations and photos, about 70 members and partners sat down to
the annual end-of-season squash club dinner. Team captains were invited to speak
about their team's performance over the season. Fred Dee, a local comedian, then
provided some entertainment and a disco.
